Untamed New England Adventure Race :: Required Gear last update 30 Sept 2011

Here is information on the gear bins/duffels teams may stage their equipment in.

As a competitor in Untamed New England, you and your team are required to carry a number of mandatory gear items with you. The mandatory gear is divided into two categories, equipment you and your team must carry at ALL times, and equipment you and your team must carry during a specific DISCIPLINE. It is not a list of what you should take, just the mandatory items that you must take as a minimum safety standard or to complete specific portions of the course.

Remember, this is not a complete list of what you should carry, but just a starting off point. You are responsible for carrying the appropriate equipment and clothing for the climate, conditions, and activities. There will be random equipment checks during the race.

Keep in mind that you must be self-sufficient for the duration of the event. You may go 24-hours or longer between transition areas, so be prepared with food, water, water-purification, etc. We aren't saying how often teams will have access to gear bins, but don't count on seeing them more than once per day.

Outside maps are NOT permitted. GPS devices are NOT permitted.

Altimeters are allowed.

Mandatory Individual Gear (required at all times by all competitors)
Item Quantity Notes
Compass 1 per person
Whistle 1 per person
Emergency Blanket 1 per person
Wool or Synthetic Cap 1 per person
Waterproof Jacket and Pants 1 per person taped seams required for waterproof gear
Headlamp or Personal Light 1 per person

Mandatory Team Gear (required by each Team at all times)
Pen or Pencil 1 per team
Knife 1 per team at least 1" blade, folding OK
First Aid Kit 1 per team Minimum first aid kit contents to include:
  • antibacterial ointment
  • 3” ace bandage
  • 12 doses of anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen, etc)
  • 12 doses of benedryl
  • tweezers
  • sunscreen
  • Epinephrine for those with anaphylactic reactions (venom allergies, etc)
Shelter 1 per team A minimum of two 8x8 ft tarps and line to tie them down will satisfy this gear requirement; something more substantial is recommended -- New England weather is very unpredictable! To be more specific, we're defining a tent as something with a sewn-in floor. So either 2 8x8ft tarps or a tent w/ a sewn-in floor. A 2-person tent will be permitted for a 2 person team. A 2-person tent will be permitted for a 3 person team. A 3-person tent will be permitted for a 4 person team.
Satellite Phone 1 per team Due to the remote "deep country" nature of this course, each team must carry an activated Iridium satellite phone during the entire race. This is for safety and emergency purposes only; using a satellite phone for any other purpose is grounds for disqualification from the event.

We will provide registered teams more information on sources for satellite phones, and many teams have had them delivered direct to the race host hotel in the past; cost is around $10/day but the deposit requires credit card information and we've found race teams are most responsible with this expensive equipment when they're financially bound to the equipment with a contract (instead of the race putting down deposits on 60 satellite phones and trying to recoup $ for any damages...).

An Iridium phone is required (not Globalstar), as reception will be much better over the race area with Iridium.   You're welcome to use your own satellite phone or another rental provider, just be sure to have your phone number available at the race check-in and make sure the unit is activated for the race.

For teams not from North America, the organization will facilitate rental satellite phones as we understand how expensive these can be to rent overseas.

*Serious medical and rescue situations have been resolved quickly with this satellite phone requirement.

Rope Gear Notes:
The ropes course includes ascending and the race organization will provide the ascenders, leg loops, and attachments for the ascenders. Teams need not bring their own ascenders, but teams are welcome to bring their own if they have them (but you will be responsible for carrying them). Through the course of 2012 Untamed New England, racers should plan to complete a rappel, an ascent, and a tyrolean traverse.

Paddle Gear Notes:

We are confirming the watercraft teams will paddle for the race; more details as we finalize them.
