Now that the race is over, the Race Map shows ALL the data collected for each team  when you select the team from the list; you may need to clear your browser cache to get the latest Race Map..

You can also download this raw data GPS data (lan/lon/time) via your team page using the link "Download GPS Data."  Note that some teams have more data than others, probably due to how the beacon was positioned on your shoulder, etc.

After a bit of clean-up and a couple good meals I'm off to bed -- I may not wake up until Tuesday or Wednesday, so I wanted to get this posted quickly.  Congratulations to all the teams who battled this course and the bogs, forests, and alpine areas that this New England landscape makes available.  All the race teams, from the lead of the pack to those struggling in their very first adventure race, impressed us with determination, teamwork, and postive attitudes -- this is the sort of stuff that inspires us to keep building these human challenges.

Credit for the race goes to many parties including the dedicated Untamed Adventure staff who fought the bugs, tended fires, and ran checkpoints around the clock.  You all are the most reliable people I know and our races depend on your passion and judgement to succeed.  Jill, working in our remote HQ in Switzerland, kept all the logistics straight and ensured the course flowed together; it's a shame she couldn't meet the racers in person, as she only knows the teams by the blinking coloured dots in the GPS tracking system.

Thanks must also go to our guerrilla journalist crew, led by Sherry and Susan, who worked so diligently to capture interviews, photos, and the spirit of the race for everyone to enjoy online.  Our goal was an interactive race experience for those following the event from the website, and we succeeded.  I won't forget how the winning team, Team Summit Achievement, got phone calls just minutes after crossing the finish line from family and sponsors tracking their progress online: "We watched you the whole way" they said.  We will have race DVDs available later this summer, so keep you eye out for that.

I need to particularly thank my in-laws, the Peloquin family in Littleton, NH, who have hosted me on several planning trips to the region.  They've been so generous with their house (guest bedroom and washing machine in particular!), vehicles (thanks for the mini-van!), and schedule (like the time Lucy picked Eric and I up at the McDonald's in Lancaster at 4 AM -- or the time at Franconia Notch during the storm!)

There are so many "thank yous" to go around, and my eyelids are heavy, so I will just suggest you check out our sponsors on the New England race site and our main website and let them know you appreciate their support for our efforts with Untamed New England; typing an email to New Balance, TrackMe360, Eastern Mountain Sports (arranging the party on the Crescent Ridge O-Course was brilliant Jen!), or Long Trail Ale takes you only a minute and it gives a tangible reminder to these businesses that their investment in us is worthwhile.  The same goes for environmental partners like the Forest Society . . . they thought we were crazy when we approached them about this race, and they were right, but we've won them over and hope to build on this in the future.

OK, enough from me already.  One of my pet peeves is a long-winded race director!  Safe travels everyone and enjoy some recovery time while we work on the next chapter for Untamed Adventure.

May your maps always be dry!

Grant Killian

The last two teams are in and we've officially closed the Untamed New England race course. Official results will be posted later on today with (perhaps) some commentary from our fearless (and sleepless) RD. Thanks to all who followed the race; it's been a fantastic 60+ hours. More teams finished and stayed on the pro course than we thought and the caliber of teams was exceptionally high.Great, great job by all! Ok, Sleep all around!

Update
Filed by Jill at 6/15/2008 1:46 AM
We are waiting for the last two teams; our volunteer extra-extraordinare, Missy, can see one team (probably 23) in the distance. From tracking we can tell that 14 is making steady progress toward the finish. Folks - we are almost done! What an exciting race; I'm incredibly impressed by all the teams out here. Amazing job done by all. A breakdown of the final adjusted (this takes bonus CPs into account) *unofficial* results for the top 6 on the Full course and Pro (3/4 Coed) division:

1st Team Summit Achievement
2nd Running Free
3rd Team Littleton Bike and Fitness
4th NYARA
5th Team Gung Ho / Hyppe
6th Aquan / RWG
7th Berlin Bike

More teams

Gung Ho/Hype are finished; Miles from Ultrabambi along with the Lakedaemonians and Nine O'Four 253 are across the finish.  Just a few more teams to go!

Calleva and Littleton Bike and Fitness
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/14/2008 8:38 PM
Both Calleva and Littleton Bike and Fitness have finished the race; Littleton has finished in 3rd place once bonus time is factored in.

Berlin Bike Arrives
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/14/2008 8:10 PM
Berlin Bike just crossed the finish line -- they don't have nearly the bonus points as some other teams on the full pro course, but achieving what they did is still a remarkable accomplishment!

Ultrabambi Arrives
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/14/2008 7:51 PM
2 of the 3 racers from Ultrabambi are at the finish line feverishly eating pizza.  Their 3rd teammate, Miles, elected to pursue more of the final trekking let and joined up with team 20 (Lakedaemonians) on a mission to the top of Cannon Mtn.

NYARA Men
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/14/2008 7:35 PM
NYARA Men had a medical escort off the course, but they're going to be fine -- just a bit shot with all the hard exertion over the last several hours.  They're eating pizza in the finish tent as I type this.

Teams off the course
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/14/2008 7:27 PM
BreatheMag, brendacohenjewelry Fugawee, and ABC-Capital Bikes are all off the course and safe.  They opted to skip the final trekking leg and just bike to the finish line.  Glad they made it safe and sound!

NaturalSelection Finishes
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/14/2008 7:25 PM
Team 25 is across the finish and safe.  They're enjoying a cold beer and some pizza.  Well done boys!  We think they're final ranking is 12th overall but we need to review the time bonuses (and get some sleep!) first.

Time Bonuses
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/14/2008 7:01 PM
The sorting on the online leaderboard doesn't reflect all the time bonuses earned by teams on the course.  We'll do our best to sort it all out tonight, but many of us have had just as little sleep as the racers . . . so you'll need to bare with us.

Second place goes to Running Free from Toronto, CA

With the sun setting, the foursome Running Free has crossed the finish line second.

Team Summit Achievement Wins UntamedNE

Last trekking leg open
Filed by Jill at 6/14/2008 9:20 AM
TSA is on the final trekking leg, a beautiful ridge trail in Franconia notch. They'll hike up around 3,000 ft and back down to the host hotel where the finish line is set up. We estimate around 4-5 hours for this trekking leg. They'll have company up there soon with Team Running Free hot on their heels.

Battle for 3rd place
Filed by Jill at 6/14/2008 7:56 AM
I just had a chance to compile allll the bonus points and it is clear that there is a heated battle going on for 3rd place. Team Littleton Bike and Fitness and NYARA both cleaned the O course and the last checkpoint that I have data for them has them coming in one minute apart! Keep your eyes on these two teams!

What is Going on with the Race on Saturday
Filed by at 6/14/2008 7:21 AM
Some more detail about the ropes site and how Saturday will work:

Once teams arrive, they will put on their climbing equipment and head to the ropes site at Artists Bluff.  Teams will be climbing the cliffs, using mechanical devices (called ‘ascenders’) to climb the sheer wall.  They will be free-hanging at some points, as well as against the rock face; it’s a good test of rope skills!  After they go up the cliff, they must rappel back down.  Their whole team must complete this circuit of ascent and descent before they can continue in the race.  EMS Climbing School is administering our ropes site and making sure everyone is safe.

After the ropes course, teams have a kayaking course to complete on Echo Lake.  Each team will be given a tandem kayak; they must use this kayak to paddle to the floating buoys in the lake.  Each team must complete two laps of the course; teams of 3 and 4 must swap out their paddlers in between laps so that everyone does a circuit of the lake.

After the kayaking course, teams must complete a final long trekking leg through the scenic Franconia Notch State Park.  Teams will hike the Kinsman Ridge Trail on the West side of the Notch, and visit Greenleaf Hut on the East side of the Notch.  All in all, over 3,000 ft of elevation gain for this relatively short trekking section.

After teams finish the trekking leg, they will continue to hike down to the finish line at the Franconia Inn.

On to Ropes!

It looks like TSA is maintaining a 20-30 minute lead over Running Free and last I heard TSA was within the line of site of the ropes course. I don't know about you, but I've never been so captured by a baby blue and green dot! We are waiting on only 2-3 teams to pass the portage in Gilman and we have a handful of teams off the water. More as we know it.

So, who are you guys and why NH?
Filed by Jill at 6/14/2008 2:27 AM

I have a bit of down time while waiting the last couple of teams to come into CP 27 and I don’t expect to get paddling splits for another hour or so. So, I thought that I’d answer some questions regarding our AR roots. We started Hampton Roads Adventure (HRA), about 5 years ago working with a team of friends while living just outside of Williamsburg, VA. Grant was really into AR, tired of traveling far for races and wanted to consistently bring the sport to the area to expose folks to it in a beginner’s sort of fashion. We started doing sprint races (4-6 h) around 5 years ago and gradually started building time onto races (ie, they just keep getting longer and longer!). When we decided to move away from Virginia, we handed HRA off to Mike and Pam who have done a phenomenal job continuing the races.

As an alternative, Grant formed Untamed Adventure and now organizes races, 1-2 per year (from Switzerland, no less) and this is officially his third race under Untamed. So, if you are out on the course, you’ll meet lots of folks from VA (both volunteers and racers) that have made the trip up; we just couldn’t do this without that kind of dedication!  Well, we probably could but it wouldn’t be nearly as fun.

Grant selected NH because I grew up in Littleton, NH, (technically we Peloquins are Berliners) so this is my backyard and, well, and it’s just an amazing landscape.Grant’s knowledge of the area, however, now far exceeds mine. I personally never spent time bushwacking through bogs growing up :). Oh, and Grant’s “real” job is software programming, so this website is his baby; thanks for all the great feedback.

Stag Hollow Cleared; volunteers sleep seconds later!
Filed by at 6/14/2008 1:15 AM

We’ve finally cleared out Stag Hollow and Chris and Pat our volunteers there have earned some major sleep time (they've been staffing the CP for 24 extremely active hours). This means that all the teams are on their way to the paddle put-in at CP 27. To the best of our knowledge (still verifiing), four teams were able to get 6 additional CPs on the O-course (total of 7). This gives these teams a substantial advantage in time bonuses: these teams are TSA, Running Free, Littleton Bike and Fitness and NYARA. It’s hard to tell how this will impact final time right now so we’ve got to see how these last two teams transition to paddling. Nevertheless, these four are probably our lead teams with Team Hype/Gung Ho right behind (got 5 out of 7 CPs).

Tidbits
Filed by Jill at 6/13/2008 9:53 PM

Wow! A girl goes to sleep for 5 hours and look what happens; what a race! I suspect that some of you are staying awake for one last peek at your team before heading to bed (have been there many a time myself) so I wanted to update. Where most of the teams are right now -Stag Hollow on the last O-course- gets pretty bad cell reception and just OK sat. phone coverage so we’ve had a hard time keeping a connection long enough to report complex split time/bonus points, etc.  It will likely be a slow process getting all those splits uploaded (my guess is 5 am EST); so AR fans- take a nap!

I am, however, getting updates from our TA#2 (CP 27). TA#2 allows teams to access gear bins and prep for the canoe leg that opens at 4 am. We have 5 teams there right now, but Team #12 and #6 are the only ones on the full pro course that cleared (got all of the bonus CPs) on that last O course. Our RD is not surprised toooo often (except when Scott Pleban is racing, of course); but he’s impressed with their race - just fantastic. Running Free and TSA will have extra time to rest, rehydrate and because they have cleaned the course thus far – their time here is off the clock. In other words – this is now a race between these two teams for the top spot and it should be thrilling day tomorrow!

Team GMARA Update
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/13/2008 5:00 PM
Team GMARA is now racing "unofficially."  They're all going to be fine, but their female teammate went to the hospital for dehydration and signs of heat exhaustion.  One of her teammates accompanied her with the paramedics.  She has been treated and will be released in the next hour or so, and race staff will be shuttling her and Chris (her teammate who elected to remain with her) back to their vehicle so they can retrieve their gear.  For the moment, their other two teammates are continuing "unoffiically" since you must finish the race with the same team as you started with to be considered an "official" race finisher.  The two remaining GMARA racers are currently on the third orienteering course and glad to know their teammates are going to be fine.

Again, everyone is going to be fine and given the hot temperatures today and the pace teams where pushing at, dehydration is a common concern.  The race medical team evaluated the situation and determined rehydration treatment and precautionary measures were appropriate in this case, but she's about out of the hospital as we type this.

Orienteering Course Surprise
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/13/2008 4:53 PM
Team Eastern Mountain Sports is surprising teams on the third, and toughest, o-course of the race by manning the lone mandatory orienteering point.  It's at the end of a tough up-hill bushwhack with several knolls and ridges to negotiate.  Team EMS worked with us, the race organization, to arrange this surprise and the crew out there are serving baked beans, drinks, and other goodies for the hearty teams that make it to the checkpoint.  It's high and exposed, so teams are surely excited to see friendly faces at the top!

Some updates from Jennifer Shultis and Team Eastern Mountain Sports up on top:
-Summit Achievement through and out at 4:35 and running free out at 4:44.
-Littleton Bike Shop over and out at 6:26 third team through
-Jenny Johnson of Littleton Bikes was thrilled to see her husband at the CP (he apparently is a friend of the EMS team or a racer with them?). After her surprise passed she asked why he wasn't at home painting.

Tough Cut-off!
Filed by Jill at 6/13/2008 1:27 PM

Over at Stag Hollow where all the action is this evening, a tough cut-off was just enforced. Teams needed to return to CP 21 by 4:00 pm to remain on the Pro Course. Half the pack made it; some (Team GMARA) by one minute! Truly exciting! Teams on Alt course D will be skipping CPs 22, 23 and 24. Sidenote: don’t forget to check out our audio content; there are some fantastic interviews with racers with our “embedded” staff.

Breakfast on the go?
Filed by Jill at 6/13/2008 10:50 AM

Cute anecdote from HQ. I was grabbing splits from the first TA and noticed that Ultrabambi was nearly there (with the online tracking) so I told Missy to watch for them any minute. An hour later she still hadn't seen them and we were a bit perplexed. It turns out they went straight into Lancaster and slept/ate in McDonalds for an hour. Very creative way to meet two goals. Wish I could have seen this.

Tidbits
Filed by Jill at 6/13/2008 10:35 AM

I have a few updates; the area where the lead teams are just gets terrible cell coverage, so I don't know too much new at this point. There are some rumors regarding some teams forgetting the detailed maps and having to navigate with low res map; so we'll have to see how map organization impacts the final result. Grant will know more. Another note - lots of folks are asking questions over trail mail regarding "bonus" hours. There are several locations that had optional CPs. If a team was able to get this CP (usually with a time constraint associated with it), they were given time bonuses. This time essentially gets subtracted from their final course time. A good thing all around ! Lastly, we were able to print out trail mail and give it to *most* of the teams in the wee hours of the morning this morning. My understanding is that teams were thrilled to have a pick me up after racing for nearly a day!

Sites Set On Higher Ground
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/13/2008 6:36 AM
The sun is out -- a brilliant morning, so bright and crisp.  Most teams are rolling through the Connecticut River valley between Vermont and New Hampshire right now.  It looks like the majority of teams have a good shot at making the 10:30 AM cut-off at CP 16 (missing this would place them on an alternate, shorter, course); this is phenomenal given the conditions for the orienteering through the Victory Wilderness last night.  Some teams (notably Aquan, who were racing in 2nd place going into the orienteering course) chose to bushwhack and shoot bearings for the majority of the course; Aquan fell several places back as a result.  The dense vegetation is relentless in Victory and and the teams that took more circuitous routes by following the "trails" faired much better.

Overnight, we have reports of teams finding deep water in certain places of the bog.   Jeff Woods, currently racing in the lead with Team Summit Achievement, recounting multiple instances of falling through the soft surface and getting chest-deep into the stagnant ponds.

But today is a different day and brings different terrain: teams have higher mountains to scale with the Crescent Range and the Presidents.  All teams are through the marsh and now have their sites set on higher, much higher, ground.

Tracking system; note to TrackMe360.com
Filed by Jill at 6/13/2008 12:10 AM
Wow, have we come a long way in 5 years; from paper passports and craft punches to realtime tracking and help. About an hour ago we got an ASAP help message from a team on the course. I got a message in my email while in Zurich Switzerland, my sister got one on her cell and grant got one one his cell. The email even came with a google map location of the team, directions included. We were able to mobilize in 3 minutes to get an EMT mobilized as well as Grant headed out to the location on the course. Folks from the actual company called and sent trail mail regarding it. Literally signals went out all around the world.  The team is completely fine; we just needed to reset the spot device. Thank you to TrackMe360.com for following up with us. Grant is out of cell phone range right now, but I wanted to follow up online and hope you see this. All is fine, thankfully!

Lakedaemonians Down 1 Racer
Filed by Checkpoint 10 Staff at 6/12/2008 6:05 PM
The Lakedaemonians, racing in their first adventure race ever, arrived at CP 10 and one of their racers had to withdraw because of some bad foot problems.  Nothing too serious or life threatening, but his feet had been wet and torn up for most of the race and they were deteriorating.  Lakedaemonians will continue racing as a 3 person team and the fourth teammate is being driven back to Franconia right now.

Talk Around The Staff Poker Game
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 6/10/2008 8:07 PM
Some of the staff took a break from all the pre-race logistics and played an impromtu game of Texas hold 'em poker tonight; the topic of "how many teams will finish the full pro course in this race?" came up.  Lots of head scratching ensued around the table . . . one muttered "5 teams or less, especially if it's hot." The concensus seems to be 5-10 teams or around 25%.  We hope everyone crosses the finish line, regardless of whether it's the full pro course or one of several alternate courses.  We, the staff of the race, will be rooting for you every step of the way!

Frost Tonight In New England?
Filed by Untamed Adventure Staff at 5/23/2008 5:26 PM
Just a couple weeks now until the race . . . here's a quote from the weather forecast for tonight for the northern New Hampshire area:
"Temps will drop into the high 30s tonight, but no frost unless you're high up in the mountains in which case look for snow and colder winds."
Although average temperatures in the race area are fairly mild for June, racers should be prepared for just about anything!  As a final caution, there's still patches of snow on the higher peaks including just above Franconia Notch.
